Butadiene production in membrane reactors: A techno-economic analysis

The direct dehydrogenation of butane (BDH) is emerging as an attractive on-purpose technology for the production 1,3-butadine. However, its product yield hindered by high rate carbon deposition associated to temperature required highly endothermic reaction. In this work, we evaluated use H2-selective membrane reactor, increase process at milder operating conditions. novel proposed reactor (MR)-assisted BDH compared from a techno-economic point view with benchmark technology. results analysis reveal that MR enables work temperatures (?85 °C), reducing formation (?98.5%) and duty (?10%). Due higher reaction yields, MR-assisted can lower shale gas-based feedstock, maintaining same capacity in benchmark; will result overall plant efficiency 50.92% plant, 37.7% case. This demonstrates valuable alternative conventional technology, almost 20% final cost 1,3-butadiene, due installation costs energy efficiency.
